Vision Zero 2.0 Road Safety Plan proposes data-based speed limit reductions
The Infrastructure and Environment Committee considered and adopted the "Vision Zero 2.0 – Road Safety Plan Update" with amendments on June 27, 2019. It hopes to reduce the speed limit of nearly 50 roads in the city and minimize road fatalities.
The update report will be considered by City Council on July 16, 2019.
Among those suggestions, the speed limit of 3 major roads in Ward 23 Scarborough North will be lowered from 60km/hour to 50km/hour:
The report said that the faster the speed, the higher the risk of injury and fatality. The City of Toronto believes that limiting speed on roads with more pedestrians and strengthening police enforcement in speed limits can create a safer environment for drivers and pedestrians.
The report is an update to the City's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan. Since the City Council approved the plan in June 2016, city staff have implemented a wide range of over 40 safety measures, including: pedestrian head start features at over 80 signalized intersections; geometric safety improvements at 31 locations across the city; more than 50 pedestrian safety corridors, including enhanced crosswalk markings; speed limit reductions; over 50 seniors safety zones and 100 school safety zones; 18 km of new sidewalks; and major road safety education campaigns.
Regarding the reduction of the road speed limit or the "Road Safety Plan", Councillor Cynthia Lai welcomes the public to have your say so that she can speak for you at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 16.
