Toronto City Council unanimously endorsed my Member's Motion on Anti-Asian racism on Wednesday, April 8, 2021. The Motion, seconded by Mayor John Tory, condemns recent acts of Anti-Asian hate, requests that a city Task Force headed by Mayor John Tory, and including myself, bring forward a progress report on an action plan by the second quarter of 2021 and authorizes resources to staff the Task Force.
Anti-Asian hate crimes are on the rise in Toronto. According to the Toronto Police Service, such crimes were up 51% in 2020 over 2019 and are up 47% in 2021 (to date) over 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic and the recent tragic event in Atlanta is a wakeup call. Such crimes are only the tip of the iceberg as many of them aren't reported.
As I stated at Council, "Let's Speak Up, Stand Up and Show Up as racism or hate have no place in Canada or Toronto. We must commit ourselves to doing everything possible to eradicate it".
